Double celebration for Casella Family Brands

It's been an exciting few days for Casella Family Wines, which has been honoured with a major trophy at the 2019 NSW Wine Awards and joined WINEDEPOT as a foundation customer.

Minister Michael Johnsen, Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture and Member for Upper Hunter, presented the Graham Gregory Award for services to the NSW wine industry to John Casella at the NSW Wine Awards lunch on Friday.

The Minister explained that the recipient of this year’s award (the 2018 Graham Gregory Award, as the award is retrospective) came from a family that arrived in Australia from Italy in the 1950s, planting their first vines in NSW in 1969. When he mentioned that their main wine brand was created in 2001 and by 2013 [yellow tail] had sold more than one billion bottles, a very surprised John Casella realised he was talking about him.

Today, John leads Casella Family Brands, Australia’s largest family-owned wine company, exporting nearly 12 million cases of wine each year to over 50 countries.

Upon accepting the award John said: “It is an honour to accept this award and join other distinguished individuals in our industry. It is also beautifully timed as this year our family celebrates 50 years in the wine business.

“When I first started studying winemaking at Charles Sturt University, I remember being disappointed that I wasn’t based in one of the big wine regions of the time, like the Barossa or McLaren Vale, but now I realise that the best thing my father ever did was settle in Griffith, NSW!”

Casella joins WINEDEPOT as foundation customer

Casella Family Brands also announced it has signed up as a customer of Digital Wine Ventures’ specialised wine distribution platform WINEDEPOT.

The deal extends across the entire Casella brand portfolio, which includes the iconic Australian wine brand [yellow tail], as well as Casella Family Wines, Peter Lehmann Wines, Brand’s Laira Coonawarra, The Magic Box Wine Collection, Morris of Rutherglen and Baileys of Glenrowan.

Under the agreement, WINEDEPOT will manage of Casella Family Brands’ entire product portfolio across a range of domestic channels.

WINEDEPOT is part of Digital Wine Ventures, with its chief executive officer, Dean Taylor, noting that the agreement with Casella validates the need for a disruptive supply chain solution such as WINEDEPOT.

“Casella’s Yenda winery site covers a working area of 95 acres and can store over 260 million litres of wine,” he noted. “At the other end of the spectrum, we also work with micro producers who hand make just a few hundred cases of wine per year.

“What this shows is that our platform caters for wine businesses of almost any scale. Having that degree of product market fit at this stage in our business cycle is very exciting.”
